Ordering series EE or I U.S. Savings Bonds will change in 2012. The U.S. Treasury will no longer issue bonds through banks after December 31. Beginning in 2012, all savings bonds must be ordered via the internet.
The new process is aimed at saving the government millions of dollars each year in processing costs because the new bonds will be ‘paperless.’ Customers may still visit the bank to cash their paper savings bonds.
Customers who wish to continue purchasing savings bonds for themselves or for a gift may purchase them online through the Treasury Direct.
